What Should I Know About Undermount Kitchen Sinks?

Chosen your sink? Now - to the mounting!

There are 3 different ways to mount kitchen sinks, and an undermount sink is one of the most effective as far as aesthetic appeal is concerned.

  • Top mount

  • An outline of the rim of the sink is drawn onto the countertop and a rough hole, a little smaller, is cut out with a jigsaw or hacksaw and then the sink is fitted into the hole. The rim rests on the countertop and the bowl is then sitting on its rim. The sink rim is clamped and a sealant used to airtight and waterproof the rim and the benchtop.

    Can I do it myself?

Yes! Mounting sinks is really easy as long as you measure correctly! The self-rimming sink gives a nice raised edge that is easy to keep clean.

  • Apron Mount

  • undermount kitchen sinks This style of mounting is so called because it is found traditionally in farmhouse or country kitchens. A great idea for a wider countertop as it is closer to you. The apron front sink is mounted into the countertop, but the front is flush with the front of the cabinet face, so that the front of the kitchen sink is left exposed. A nice way to show off the front of the sink which may be copper or ceramic.

  • Undermount Kitchen Sinks

  • In this type of mounting, the undermount kitchen sink is placed under the countertop and clamped there. Again a sealant is used for waterproofing. The edge of the countertop where the 'hole' is cut out, is exposed to view and so must be a carefully cut and polished edge.

In an integrated kitchen, this type of mounting is popular as it adds to a streamlined and seamless effect. A contemporary kitchen style benefits from this look.

If you are unsure about which type will suit your style and your actual sink, try to imagine the sink in place and remember that cleaning-ease is also a factor.
