Smart Small Kitchen Plans for Your Remodel

Custom Search

Are you looking for perfect small kitchen plans and layout for your space?

Look no further...let us assist you in deciding upon exactly which layout will be the right one for your kitchen.

You will need one of three traditional layouts for kitchens. These are:

  • the 'U' shaped kitchen
  • the 'L' shaped kitchen
  • the galley style kitchen
  • small kitchen plans

The one you choose will be the one that suits your space the best. All are very functional and can be designed to be very efficient, as well as allowing you to make it very beautiful and stylish.

Decide on your style - one that will go with the overall style of your home. Then do the homework and set your budget.

Now think about your activities in the kitchen and decide exactly what you want your kitchen to do - in line with your lifestyle. And prioritise these, as you may have to compromise due to space limitations.

Now consider each of the small kitchen plans and designs suggested here:

    The 'U' shaped kitchen

This layout works well as it allows for maximum storage and workspace. Cabinets and benches line 3 of the 4 walls and so the floor space is reduced. In a small kitchen, you'd want to have slim-line cabinets and cupboards, which means that you can have as many cabinets as you can fit in, only less deep.

An option, if the space feels too enclosed, is to make the third wall into a breakfast bar / bench to give more light and open-ness. The space between benchtops is recommended to be 1500-2200mm. This enables 2 or more people to move past each other in the aisle if both are in the kitchen.

With small kitchen plans for layout, it is not so much the amount of space that you have, but how you use it, that really counts!

    The 'L' shaped kitchen

This layout is compact enough for a small space, and it is built into the corner which may leave you enough space for an eating area in the other corner. It has to be very carefully designed so that the space is made to cater for a storage system, incorporating floor to ceiling cabinets, pantry and appliances.

Vertical storage will allow you to use the space normally left between cabinets and the ceiling. There are options for smaller compact appliances that fit better into a small kitchen layout.

    The galley style kitchen

One of the most efficient kitchen layouts, the galley kitchen has 2 rows of cabinetry in a parallel lines.

There are 2 countertops for preparation which is very convenient. The corridor can be closed at one end to minimize traffic in the area and allow sliding drawers and cabinet doors that open to do so at the same time.

There is limited under bench storage space , but you can optimise the space overhead on the wall side with tall cabinets, or perhaps a butler's pantry. Concealing the fridge and dishwasher behind cabinetry gives the small kitchen a streamlined and tidy look.

One of the disadvantages of the galley kitchen is that there is often only enough space for one person to be in it at a time. The strength of this design is that it is easy to place everything within reach. A galley kitchen can be as long as you like. A wider kitchen space can utilise the 'U' shaped layout.

    Placing the work triangle

The basic kitchen work triangle can be placed anywhere along the length of the galley as long as you keep the elements grouped together.

Choose the small kitchen plans and layout that best suits your needs and that you think will work and look best in your space. Check that you have thought of everything that you want to fit into it.
