Rustic Kitchens

rustic kitchens

What could be more charming than a rustic kitchen in an 18th century farmhouse — or perhaps one that just appears that way? For those of us who live in contemporary settings, it may seem like a difficult look to achieve — but a few small touches can transform any kitchen into one that’s warm and inviting.

In rustic kitchens, this old-fashioned appearance is achieved with distressing and finishing techniques that create an inviting look that radiates warmth and that "well worn" feeling.

rustic kitchens

characteristics

Common characteristics include cabinets in knotty pine, hickory or alder; ceiling beams; and warm, rich shades of brown, red, green and yellow.

Think natural materials such as stone floors, mosaic tiles, brick or plaster walls and pewter or copper accents.

Furniture is large and chunky; solid and sturdy. There are displays of handpainted crockery and plates. Wrought iron is used in wall art and earthenware pots are evident on the roughly tiled floor.

accessories

Enhance the rustic look of your current set of kitchen cabinets by adding some accessories like new knobs, brass hinges and other metal decorative features. Finding rustic knobs won’t be that hard, they can be located at your local building supply store, and of course at all the kitchen stores and design centers.

Add wooden racks overhead for hanging pots and pans from, along with wall art in wrought iron. Mats and rugs in bold colors and artefacts of cane, earthenware and pewter will all add to this style. Use ceramic tiles or great flagstones on the floor.
