Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

refinishing kitchen cabinets

About refinishing kitchen cabinets ...

Refinishing kitchen cabinets is by far the least expensive option when it comes to giving your cabinets a facelift. And moreover, you can do this yourself by following some simple guidelines and the use of tools that you are likely to have in your garage anyway.

Steps to follow:

  • It will be very much easier if you disassemble the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Take these off and place the surfaces flat on a table where you can leave them to dry etc. such as in the garage. Number the panels so that you can put it back together again!
  • Prepare the surfaces by cleaning with TSP (trisodium phosphate), Dry.
  • Sand the surfaces evenly in the same direction as the grain, with sandpaper ranging from a rough to a fine (180) grit. Remove all dust with soft rags.

  • You may need to fill holes or blemishes. If this is the case, use a polyfiller from your hardware store and a palette knife. Once the filler is dry, you can sand it back to level with the surface again. Thoroughly clean all surfaces with a deglosser like "Paso" so that all is ready for painting or staining.
  • The easiest way to see what a stain color will be is to buy a small pot of stain and test it on a panel beforehand. You can easily sand it off if you don't like the result. You can use a smooth cloth to apply the stain, or can brush it on with a soft brush. Leave the panels to dry.

  • You can apply as many coats as you like, but remember to lightly sand each time inbetween coats. The more coats you apply, the darker the color will become.
  • Now you need to apply a protective finish with a spray or soft brush. Be sure to check which type of finish to use as different stains react to different finishes. Do multiple thin coats and lightly buff with a fine sanding block in between these. You'll achieve a beautiful high gloss effect.
  • Cure and harden and then reassemble and replace in your kitchen.
