Painting or Refacing Kitchen Cabinets Will Add Value To Your Home!

refacing kitchen cabinets

Getting the kitchen ready for painting...

Once you have done all the preparation for refacing kitchen cabinets, you will need to do the following to get the room ready for action:

Clear everything off the counters, benchtops and floor.

Remove free standing items.

Cover the splashback, windows, fixed appliances, countertops and flooring with plastic drop sheets and masking tape.

Protect the walls near the refaced kitchen cabinets, too.

Set up a space to use as a work area for painting drawers, shelves and doors.

How to clean the surfaces successfully...

Wash all surfaces with TSP (Tri-sodium Phosphate) first to get rid of grease, dirt and heat build-up. (Use your usual solvent if you prefer.)

Preparing to paint...

If you remove the doors of your cabinets, label them to avoid confusion later when putting them back!

Keep all hinges and handles or knobs in a safe place.

Don't forget to use rubber gloves and eye protection when using cleaners or solvents.

Rinse well after washing and let dry thoroughly.

You might want to take overhead cabinets off the wall (if you can!) to make things easier and quicker.

It's often awkward to work up high where they're still attached to the wall.

Sanding or stripping those cabinets for refacing...

You can use light sandpaper and a hefty dose of elbow grease to bring your doors back to the timber making a lovely smooth finish for painting.

If you want to use an orbital sander, please go very lightly - it is easy to actually create dents and gouges if you aren't very careful!

And remember to follow the direction of the grain as you sand...never across it. Even the finest sandpaper will leave small marks in the wrong direction, otherwise.

Dust and wipe with a damp cloth and when you are happy that all is smooth, filled and ready for painting.

Filling...

You can buy filler to fill up any cracks or dents that you have on the doors or drawers. Your local hardware shop will have the correct type and colour for timber pieces to match surfaces for refacing kitchen cabinets.
