Are you contemplating a bright makeover for your kitchen? Learn how to paint kitchen cabinets and you'll save yourself heaps of money while making your kitchen sunny and fresh without replacing perfectly good, if tired, cabinets.
How you can paint your kitchen cabinets
All you need to paint kitchen cabinets is enthusiasm, sandpaper, paint and a brush, and one day of your weekend! Take the doors off the cabinets and drawers out to make this process easier. Label the panels so that you know where they belong later.
Protect the countertop by covering with rosin paper. Cover the backsplash with plastic and the walls nearby, if necessary.
The secret to achieving high gloss beautiful new cabinets, is good preparation. Cleaning is the most important step. Remove all the built-up grime that cabinet faces will have acquired, with TSP (a heavy-duty cleaner).
Now you'll need some sandpaper, ranging from coarse (100 grit) to very fine (400 grit). Use the sandpaper to sand the faces in the direction of the grain of the wood. Use a primer to brush on as an undercoat so that the paint will ahere well to the surface. The primer will also fill in small blemishes and cracks in the wood so that a nice glossy finish will be achieved.
Sand the primer and make the surfaces very smooth. Wipe off dust with a tack cloth. Make sure that all dust is swept away before you paint.
Use latex paint for the top coats as oil-based paints are very messy and the fumes are toxic. latex paints labelled "100% acrylic" are perfect for this and will give you an even and durable finish.
A few handy tips :
Screw in small hooks into the cabinet doors so that you can hold these to handle the panels without leaving thumbprints on the fresh paint.
Always keep the panels perfectly flat when paint is drying or you will have dribbles and uneveness. Apply a few thin coats of paint rather than fewer heavy coats. Always paint with the grain.
Sand with very fine sandpaper in between each coat. This will build up a high gloss on the surfaces.
Once the cabinets have cured (a couple of days), attach hinges and rehang.
Why not add some new knobs or handles for a great Wow factor?
Enjoy your 'new' cabinets!
