Making an Outdoor Kitchen Grill
One of our favorite summer activities is barbequing over an outdoor kitchen grill - the mouth-watering smells and conviviality around the fire is a great way to spend a weekend.
To make the most of eating outdoors, you need to have a reliable and easily maintained grill. This makes cooking easy and certainly widens the range of things you can cook for friends and family.
Need an outdoor kitchen grill for summer entertaining?
When looking for a grill that suits YOUR needs you have a wide variety from which to select. A grill can be as simple as a storage cabinet for cooking utensils and plates or as ambitious as a built-in grill including rangehood, sink, worktop spaces etc.
Ask yourself, "Am I looking for a quality BBQ? How long should I expect my BBQ to last? Do I want a free-standing grill or a built-in one?"
You'll find grills with cooking areas from 24 to about 48 in. wide and 15 to 26 in. deep. You can also add a side burner or shelf, each of which can add another foot or so to the width. Whichever grill you choose, position it so smoke blows away from people eating.
The main grill types are charcoal and gas (natural gas or liquid propane). Charcoal units range from about US$80 to $500. Grills at the top end of the market include work shelves, charcoal-storage areas and autoignition features.
Gas units offer more advantages. Many can be built into an incombustible surround. They are quick to get going and you don't have to find fuel beforehand. These grills also give you greater control over cooking temperatures.
Good-quality gas grills start at about US$200 and can cost as much as $4,000 or more. The high performance grills offer many additional accessories and extras as well as more surface area for worktops etc.
Here's a final design tip. In any outdoor kitchen design, use materials that are easy to maintain. Your surfaces should be easily cleaned, impervious to rust and unaffected by weather. Suggested materials are stone, masonry, stainless steel, specially treated timber and outdoor-rated tile.
When you start looking at grills, go to as many showrooms as you can stand to, and negotiate a deal on the grill you like. If you are buying at the end of, or before the new summer, you'll get a better deal!
