Ceiling lighting
Lights have different functions.
Are you constantly frustrated with your dimly-lit cooking and preparation area?
You really need to be able to see well in this space of all the spaces in your home! And good lighting adds drama and highlights your glorious new cabinetry and countertops!
What do you want the lights to do?
In days gone by, a single kitchen ceiling light fixture was thought to be enough under which to perform all the tasks required. Happily, there has been a far greater emphasis on
lighting for special purposes in the kitchen recently.
The choice depends upon the size of the room and what you want to achieve with your general lighting.
Ever-popular halogen downlights
These come in various sizes.
They add a beautiful starry
type of light when in ceilings and a crisp, bright, white light when used under cabinets
to cast light over work surfaces. They give a dramatic look by highlighting
granite and marble. Even the food looks tastier!
Down-lighting is energy-efficient.
You can have some on and some off, to alter the atmosphere when you want to. Recessed downlighting gives an even illumination and they make an area alight and beautiful...put them over the cooktop and sink.
Undercabinet lights
These are used to illuminate countertops. They should be positioned as close to the front part of the cabinet as possible so as to minimise the glare. You would probably choose fluorescent fixtures to be as energy-saving as possible.
The fixtures come in all
sizes and can be on a track and in slim miniature designs. The light can be aimed to light up countertops or accent walls and ceilings.
Make kitchen ceiling lighting a really interesting feature of your home...
Consider getting a lighting consultant to show you how to circuit them separately so that your lighting is in regions. This allows you greater flexibility in how you utilise
them to create mood and ambience, by turning on only those you want. Bring the consultant a layout of your new space to get the best advice. Some will even come to your home to assess the kitchen.
Pendant lights are making a big comeback and can be used to illuminate an island, for example.
The pendants can be on a track lighting system, or grouped in threes from rods in the ceiling.
Finished? ... Not quite! Give the light over the sink its own switch as with those over the island. You'll be very happy with the results!
If you use the same colored bulbs throughout the kitchen the tones of all your fittings will be at the same intensity which will help to achieve a cohesive look.
If your kitchen ceiling lighting is done well, people will notice how you've designed your lighting to enhance the style and look of your kitchen and how, at the flick of a switch,
you change the ambience and atmosphere.
All this, as well as making your space extremely functional and efficient with some well-chosen lighting!
