Choose From Kitchen Styles That Suit You and Your Budget!

How to choose from all of the design trends and kitchen styles available? You are planning a new space and want it to be functional as well as stylish..

kitchen styles

Before you begin to design your new area, you may think about what will suit the overall style of your home..for example, if you have a period home with lots of indoor period features and your furniture has been chosen with these in mind, then a very contemporary, sleek and minimalist kitchen style, may clash with this.

However, while it is important to keep the house style in mind, it is possible to compromise by adding a feature that will give a bit of one kitchen style to another. It is just as important that you are happy with the kitchen you create, or if remodelling for selling purposes, that you keep in mind the demands of your targeted market.

There are 3 main categories of style when it comes to a kitchen:

  • traditional
  • classic
  • contemporary
  • kitchen styles

    Traditional style:
includes farmhouse and rustic kitchen styles. Here the emphasis is on a homely, old-fashioned feel where grandma used to bake scones and favourite knick-knacks are on display. Items are valued for their charm and longevity as well as intrinsic and sentimental value. A bit of 'clutter' and things that 'don't work anymore' are to be expected!

    Classic styles:
include period styles such as Victorian, Edwardian, French and Country. These styles are suited especially to homes built in that same style. While some of these styles are quite formal, they need not be. Country kitchens have an American flavour and are reminiscient of folk art decoration, handmade checked cushions and welcoming messages in wrought iron. A wholesome and fresh feel that speaks of good nutritious cooking.. More formal are the period kitchen styles.

    Contemporary styles:
are minimalist where all the 'clutter' of small appliances etc. are hidden away in order to give a streamlined effect, adding to a more sophisticated and sleek look. Materials and textures are harder but very new-age.The emphaisis is on functionality and the appeal of good design in natural and manufactured materials. Well positioned arrays of lighting give atmosphere that can be altered by day and by night. Entertaining is done in the same space, as might homework and other everyday 'office' tasks. Clean lines and low 'busyness'.

If you want to go for a style that will last, you may choose one that you like, but make it an 'integrated kitchen' . Integrated means that all appliances are well hidden behind panels or cupboards. This gets rid of clutter and makes the space unbroken in a visual way, which increases the sense of size of the kitchen.

Designers like us, feel that this 'integrated' trend will persist while the stainless steel trend is also relied upon to be popular for a while to come.

So, if you want to remain fashionable, 'de-clutter', integrate, and go for neutral colors. Your kitchen will stand the test of time. You should aim at your space still being appealing and fresh for about 15 years.
