Are You Going To Do the Kitchen Renovation Yourself?
Do it yourself...or not? It's a difficult dilemma pondering whether to save money by doing the project yourself
or...to break raid the bank account and hire contractors. Not an easy decision.
Let's break it down into a few basic questions to consider.
How Motivated Are You to Do it Yourself?
Do you have an irresistable desire to knock down interior walls? To renovate an entire kitchen? Or do you find that painting
the fence one Sunday is quite enough to last a lifetime satisfying your creative urges? It's important to gauge how much
you really want to
take on yourself before doing it.
Recommendation: Take on some small projects first to make sure you really want to "do it yourself" before tackling larger
projects.
How Motivated Are You to Have Strangers in Your House?
They're in your house to help you, but in the process they turn your house upside-down. And managing work crews in your
house is a neither easy nor comfortable. You will have very little space to call your own, to sit and to get through
daily acivities - often the power will be off, the lights out and the house open to the elemnets. Do not underestimate
the imposition of four workmen knocking down walls in your house for a
solid week. Plus they will be there every minute if the day from very early until late. You have to run a household inbetween!
Recommendation: Decide how much relinquishing of control in your house you can tolerate before inviting workers in.
What is Your Skill Level for all of the tasks required?
You have the power to take on any renovation project. Anyone with average intellect is quite capable of
learning how to re-wire the entire kitchen. However, remember that your kitchen is a work in progress. While you learn to
distinguish ground wires from neutral, the kitchen is a disaster and you're washing sinks with a garden hose on the lawn in
the darkness. And, the work in progress could go on for an awfully long time and even come to a complete
standstill when you get waylaid for whatever reason.
Recommendation: Make certain you're at the proper skill level (or can learn quickly enough) to complete the project
in a reasonable time period.
Do You Have the Time?
Sanding the walls is one thing. Sanding at 9:30pm after a full day of teaching children is another thing.
And don't you also have a life to lead? Not to mention the MESS and NOISE! This is a number one relationship stressor and strainer.
You could be sanding while your husband is trying to relax and watch his favorite TV program in peace and quiet after
a hard day at the office.
Recommendation: Know in advance how much time you want to put into a project-before starting it.
How Flexible Is Your Money Situation
Money, or lack of it, motivates the do-it-yourselfer. While there is a certain satisfaction in replacing your front door
yourself, chances are your door won't hang as well, or open as gently and easily as it would if you had
got the local to do it.
Recommendation: If you have the money, and the project looks infinitely complicated and lengthy, consider hiring contractors.
You just might find that the extra expennse is well offset against the lessening of time, stress and inconvenience.
Your kitchen will look all the better for the experience and skill of a good contractor!
