Kitchen Remodel Plan for The Elderly
Kitchen remodel plan - as our Baby-Boomers get older, and live longer, there is a growing need to design spaces that are easier to negotiate and more user-friendly for them.
Older people require living spaces that are above all else, safe places for them to access.
This means that appliances are designed so that, if in a forgetful moment they are left on, they won't cause fires or electrical shorts.
Of course, manufacturers place great emphasis on the safety of their products and are always keen to find new ways to make things safer for use by all of the family, regardless of age.
But older people need the special design of knobs that are larger, with bigger and more readable dials and faces, of ovens, stovetops and dishwashers at heights that preclude bending over too much, or too much reaching downwards.
They need storage that is designed so that they don't have to reach high up or stoop low down.
And they need to be able to cook in an efficient and quicker manner, as most household tasks take longer as we get older.
An area that caters for all of these things will, indeed, be a great asset to our elderly relatives and friends.
Designers are considering ergonomics (the study of ways to use equipment and work places easily and with movements that the body can happily achieve without strain or discomfort) more and more in their designs, especially in the home and in eating spaces.
Old people also need surfaces that suit them; non-slip flooring and lightweight cookware - no very heavy casserole dishes or roasting pans.
Also, with the ridiculousy over-zealous packaging and wrapping of products these days, they often have trouble taking lids off jars and bottles - and this issue needs to be addressed swiftly.
Let us hope that our elderly find that eating and food preparation areas - kitchens - become designed with their use in mind, as a matter of course over the next few years.
A kitchen remodel plan will enable them to remain independent for longer and more happily - something we all want for ourselves in the end?!
