Using Kitchen Paint Colors As You Want
Wondering which kitchen paint colors you should use in your new kitchen?
Well, it's easy to enliven a room by simply painting the walls. But perhaps you want to go a step further and plan the whole design of your kitchen around the hues and tones and materials used throughout. The textures, tones and materials of your cabinets, countertops, backsplash, walls and flooring are what need to be co-ordinated to give the best overall effect.
There are several ways to go about this:
You can...
Select your benchtops first. Many people have a firm idea about what material they will use in benchtops - stone, engineered stone, laminate, cement, recycled paper and other recycled materials such as aluminium cans and porcelain.
Then choose your flooring materials, although you may already have wooden or tiled flooring in place - in which case you need to work around what you already have.
Your floor, design-wise, should be the darkest tone in the kitchen. Kitchen paint color becomes progressively lighter the higher up you go, until the ceiling is white, usually.
After this, you could select the materials for your cabinets and then the backsplash, tying in the benchtop and the cabinets. Lastly, choose the wall tone which can be an overall one, or you could have a feature wall in a darker tone, perhaps.
Alternatively, choose your wall and floor tints and materials depending upon how the kitchen flows into other areas of the home and how you want it to blend with these.
After this, choose cabinetry and backsplashes to suit the palette already chosen or present, and then a countertop to lift your scheme or blend in.
So if you are determined to use a particular material and kitchen paint color, for example, a granite countertop, then take a sample of this and match everything else around it. Always go and look at at least 2 showrooms for tiles, laminates and benchtops, and then go to a big paint shop and bring home swatches of all the tones you think you may like.
Remember your cabinet hardware - handles, knobs, and your sinks and tapware because these will also be a part of your kitchen design.
Put it all together and try to visualise how it will look and the sort of personality and atmosphere you want to create in your kitchen.
Remember that you can create a kitchen that is entirely a reflection of your taste, or you can create one that is more muted, if you are considering an appeal to the general market if you are wanting to sell soon. In this case, it is probably better to plan around a neutral palette and use the backsplash or one wall to highlight a complementary color that will give a dramatic 'wow' factor - if you want one.
The new kitchen paint colors that are gaining popularity are muted light greys, lattes, mocchas and chocolates. Always popular are creams, whites and stainless steel to lift the atmosphere.
Do the legwork, collect swatches and samples, lay them out in the kitchen, and see what a stunning kitchen you have made! And that will also add value to your home.
