Do you hate having electric lights on all day long in your kitchen?

Well...You may be able to solve this problem by letting in heaps of natural light (at no cost after installation) via a roof window or a 'window to the sky.'

Can I do it myself?

Many can be installed by you as they require no structural change.

This kitchen lighting idea is perfect for most types of roofing and degree of pitch.

Modern openings are installed to reflect the light down to the directed space. They are relatively inexpensive, have no ongoing costs, and most importantly, they are eco-friendly! A real bonus!

Simple to install if you are only a little "handy", the natural light give a wonderful lift to the look and feel of your kitchen.

Sky-lights cost from approximately USD$ 100 and AUD$ 300 uninstalled. It all depends on your type of roof and the type of kitchen aperture you want to install.

Different types of sky-lights

  • vented sky-lights give you fresh air as well as natural light. They can be operated by remote-control if in inaccessible places. These are great because they can be used as a natural eco-friendly ventilation solution. (Perhaps you could do without the air conditioner?)

  • Non-vented fixed sky-lights are more ecponomical because they don't need to open.
  • There are tubular sky-lights or 'sun-tunnels'. These can also be put onto roofs with a very steep pitch (up to 60 degrees)and are designed to gather as much light as possible.
  • Roof-windows are a slightly different product which are a choice if you can reach the window.

  • You can get blinds on fixed sky-lights, and the light coming through a tubular skylight can be altered for more or less concentrated light.

All kitchen skylights should be fitted with flashing so as to make them waterproof. Modern flashing systems don't break down like sealants can do over time.

Don't forget to close your vented sky-light in case of rain, though!
