Add Kitchen Islands for Functionality, Space, Storage and Beauty...
Kitchen Islands...
an island in your new space gives you
many possibilities - we can help with lots of information about
how to design it and what to include.
With the kitchen as the heart of your home, it is inevitable that family
and friends will congregate around the modern version of the kitchen table -
the kitchen island. And trends show that islands are getting larger
and more complex.
If you have space for a kitchen table in your new kitchen, then you will
have even more space
for a beautiful island, as the chairs or stools can
be pushed underneath the counter.
The kitchen island is one of the most lovely features of the modern kitchen - it offers
versatility in its uses and it is so attractive with its expanse of granite
or other countertop material, highlighting the style of your space.
A Handy Tip...
If you are unsure whether a kitchen island will fit into your space well, either
draw the dimensions you want on the floor with chalk, or mark it out in masking tape
to give you an idea of the floor space required. Even better, place a chair at each
corner for a few days so that you can see how 'bulky' would be and how the traffic flows around it.
You need to be aware of the 'work triangle' - that imaginary triangle between
the most used work spaces ...the fridge, oven and sink, and how
the island may cut into that space. If it does, it could be in the way...but
to our way of thinking, even though you may be breaking a hard design 'rule' here,
it is worth considering anyway, because the islandisland is such a useful and stunning feature!
What will my island be used for?
an extra storage space
space for sink, cooktop, deep fryer
extra work preparation surface
eating and sitting area
shelves for cookbooks, wine racks etc.
What about plumbing, rangehood and electricals?

Where do I start?
...If you have a kitchen consultant already involved in your kitchen design, ask for more
advice and options to suit your needs. If not, read through kitchen magazines to get ideas
for how you'd like your island to look. You can visit showrooms and see how
they combine the island types into various styles.
Our advice is that you should keep the materials the same as you are using in the rest of the
area for the sake of continuity and aesthetics. Carry through the same countertops, faucets,
and cabinetry.
You'll be truly delighted with your new island...just keep in mind your needs and then get
at least 3 quotes from cabinet makers to get an idea of cost!
