More Beautiful Materials For Kitchen Island Plans
Kitchen island plans automatically include decisions to be made about countertops
For the pros and cons of natural and engineered stones, and concrete kitchen countertops, please see Kitchen Countertops
Stainless Steel
This kitchen countertop gives a very clean, streamlined and contemporary look to your kitchen...almost industrial.
Stainless steel can take harsh abuse without discoloring or rusting. It is easy to clean, heat resistant and maintains
its luster.
It is very hygienic - bacteria can't survive long on it. Stainless steel may dent and scratch. One other consideration is that
it is noisy and some feel it looks cold and clinical! See stainless steel sinks for more information about these.
Wood / Butcher Block
Hardwoods such as maple and oak are used to give a warmth and beauty to kitchen countertops. There are many colors and grains which
can be stunning!
Woods are durable and easy to clean. When necessary, they can be sanded and resealed. Otherwise,
every couple of months they should be oiled. Wood can be burnt and any pools of water, if left, will cause the grain to open up.
Laminate
Many kitchen island plans incorporate popular laminate. Laminates come in a vast array of colors and can often be mistaken for stone at a distance.
A man-made surface,
laminate is easy to clean and very durable. Laminate is an inexpensive option for a kitchen benchtop that requires no maintenance.
Ceramic
Another inexpensive choice, ceramic tiles are easy to replace if they get chipped or cracked, and you can choose tile sizes and colors and patterns
from an endless variety for your kitchen countertop.
Light-colored grout may show stains. Although heat resistant, the tiles give an uneven benchtop surface.
Copper
The warmth and character of copper would add real beauty to your kitchen! Bacteria cannot survive on it and it develops a beautiful patina over time.
A copper kitchen countertop doesn't need polishing but will naturally oxidize. See copper sinks to find
out more about these.
Soapstone
Found in older homes, soapstone is stain and heat resistant, and matures into a deep grey-green color.
It is smooth
and non-porous. A soapstone kitchen countertoptop mixes well with wood and ceramic.
Before you buy and while still designing and making kitchen island plans, bring home samples and color swatches to decide which kitchen benchtop looks best with your decor.
