Kitchen Island Designs That Are Both Functional and Beautiful!
Needing kitchen island designs for your new kitchen? Do you want to know about
designing it, and what to have where?
First you must decide what you will use your island for, because this will
affect its form.
Possible functions of your island
Storage
Use cabinets and drawers in the same style as the rest of your kitchen cabinetry.
Match the countertops too. You can have wine racks on one end along with bookshelves
for cookery books. This really adds sophistcation to your design!
Other shelving can be used for artworks and highlighted by undershelf downlights. Bar fridges can be
included in your island, too.
Preparation work space
Sinply have a glorious expanse of countertop on which you can work, lean, talk, help with homework
and sit at when waiting for things to cook in the oven! A butcher's block can be built
into the countertop so that you don't damage the counter surface.
Cooking
A cooktop and / or oven can be placed into the countertop and beneath the island.
This is a wonderful way of getting another chef out of your way when you are at the other
cooktop! Or to just free up space elsewhere.
Seating and eating
An island is a fantastic way of using the kitchen as an informal eating place. Have one
side made to overhang as a 'breakfast bar' so that you can seat as many people as can be
accommodated along the length of your island, and add stools or chairs that match the decor
and can be pushed underneath if you wish. A clean and tidy
solution.
There are no hard and fast rules about benchtop height in kitchen island designs. Choose what you prefer and works
best for the functions necessary. But you can use the same height as your other countertops
for preparing food, and a lower or higher one for sitting at depending on the height of
your stools / chairs.
Appliances
Dishwashers, sinks and food disposal units can be placed into the island instead of cabinets,
if you prefer.
