Bamboo is A Great Eco-Friendly Option!
Need some great kitchen flooring ideas?
Try bamboo flooring. This is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth. It can be harvested after about 5-7 years and then renews itself again and again for further harvesting.
The harvesting practices use little heavy machinery and much of the harvest is done by hand. Little or no pesticides are used in the plantations.
If you are worried about destroying food for Pandas, don't be... there are growing amounts of legislation in place to protect endangered species and to adhere to best manufacturing processes. So you can see why environmentalists widely embrace these products.
The Advantages of Bamboo
Bamboo flooring comes in boards or planks that fit together, and is light, easy to install and generally cheaper than other harder wood floor materials.
It is highly abrasion resistant.
This material is stable under both humid and dry conditions
It is low allergenic - a feature to think about if you have babies often on your floor as you work in the kitchen.
The boards relatively easy to repair. Any damaged boards can be replaced singly and will still 'match' the others as there are varying tones and colors in the boards anyway.
It is also water resistant.
Easy installation; you simply glue or nail down onto the material you have already on the surface of the floor.
The floorboards are available in natural or caramelized colors (darker colors are achieved by heating the wood in the manufacturing process.)
The different colors in the planking make it visually appealing and provide a focal point in the kitchen.
The Disadvantages
Planking for bamboo flooring may fade due to intense sunlight. However, you can reseal or finish the boards every few years.
It is a new material that hasn't yet been really tested 'in situ' for long term durability.
This material is suddenly the newest and latest flooring product in a range of more environmentally friendly materials that are replacing older materials, which are not renewable.
As people become more and more conscious of the need for sustainable materials, those such as this material will increase in popularity by leaps and bounds.
