Creative Use of Kitchen Colors Adds Beauty and Value

This page gives you some ideas on what to do to revamp your kitchen colors by adding new cabinet colors. In some cases these can be repainted or refaced; which involves sanding back and then repainting the faces of the cabinets and all panels that are seen, or, in the case of refacing, the front panels of the cabinets being taken off and refaced with a veneer that you choose.

If you are starting out with designing a new kitchen, then you have the advantage of planning your kitchen colors in the light of the other materials and colors that you are using in flooring, walls, splashback and benchtops. This means that you can use the cabinetry as a focal point to add a splash of bold, vibrant color which will enliven an otherwise usually monochromatic kitchen color scheme.

This modern black and orange kitchen is very small and found in a loft conversion in an inner city precinct. The apartment's colors are monochromatic tones of taupe, light sandstone and off-whites. The overhead cabinets and the pullout drawers are bright orange two-pac, very shiny and with long rectangular-prism handles of polished chrome. These handles appear on the black cupboards below, thereby linking the two features together. Cleverly, the designer has brought in a dining table and chairs of dark wood with orange upholstery that matches the orange and black of the cabinets. The wall tiles match the floor tiles and offer a good neutral backdrop to the drama of the cabinets. This choice of kitchen colors give the kitchen a sophistication and sleekness that is also very eye-catching and bold.

In this kitchen, in a Mid-American farmhouse, the wooden cabinets have been repainted a deep crimson and contrasted with pewter knobs. The single circular bowl sink is stainless steel with ceramic country-style faucets and tapware, and the ceramic tiles are slightly textured and antique white. Under the wall cabinets are task lights which give a nice ambience to the red of the cabinetry. The window blinds are of a floral fabric which complements the country theme. Because of the dark floor, the countertops chosen were dark engineered stone, which adds a note of seriousness to the otherwise rather whimsical kitchen colors. Altogether, the color scheme works very well in this farmhouse and adds a real feeling of warmth and depth. Picture how different the atmosphere would have been with a different cabinetry color.

This contemporary kitchen features design elements integrated into the cabinetry so that it all appears seamless and very minimalist. The look wanted was functional and dramatic, and to this end a black, white and lime green color scheme was selected. The walls are of the same color as the living area that the kitchen flows into, thereby giving a holistic color scheme through the apartment. The black adds a note of sophistication and the handle-less drawers and cabinets ensure that the eye moves seamlessly over the whole kitchen, appreciating the overall design. See how the lime green really adds a boldness and at the same time a feeling of being in "Peppermint Park" (cocktail bar) in London - an air of the unexpected!

Another ultra-modern kitchen- this time in a flat in London. Here the designer has opted for black and red - very trendy in Europe and always a nice contrast. Mixed in with this is the stainless steel (textured) of the appliances, splashback and toe-kicks. With almost a commercial kitchen look, this kitchen is designed for a gourmet chef - there is an island opposite this wall design with an extra sink and preparation work space featuring the same colors. See how the deep red works well with the black and silver. The fridge is black and the shelving is silver. Again, lighting is an important element of the overall design. The glossy surfaces mirror images and give a feeling of hygiene and functionality.

Look at what you want and how it is going to fit in - and then expand your thinking to include a dramatic color used in a small way, that will add a touch of uniqueness to your design. You will be very happy with the results!
