Farmers Markets - Shopping Locally Has Many Advantages

Shopping Locally Has Many Advantages!

farmers-markets

There is heightened interest in farmers markets for food which has been grown locally.

This is due to people showing more interest in where and how the food they consume is grown, what fertilisers are used, the living conditions and methods of killing livestock, the distances the food has travelled to the shops, the packaging and the treatment given (freezing for example) before it reaches the supermarkets.

Often this is a combined result of increasing concern for the planet's uses and the benefits of growing and eating local food, and concern about climate change and our global emissions.

People realise that buying oranges from a far flung corner of the world just so that we can eat them when they are out of season locally, is not a viable concept in this age of conservationism.

More and more of us are eating in-season local produce. This must make economic and sustainable sense!

In France's supermarkets, for example, chickens are presented in perfect air-dried fashion and taken in a brown paper bag to the checkout where its cost is calculated.

This sort of advanced concept will go hand in hand with better packaging techniques around the 'rich' world, where packaging will become a thing of the past and a machine will decode the food giving the consumer nutritional information, as well as billing them when they walk out of the supermarket.

People can now look up information on the internet about exactly where their meat has come from, and can track down the farmer whose animal it was and ask him how and where the animal was grown and slaughtered.

Many animals are now being slaughtered on site on the farm, due to a push to avoid stressing animals unduly - both a humane and a better product consideration.

Think about shopping at your local farmers markets or even going to pick your own fruit and vegetables directly from the farmland.

You'll be helping the planet and improving the quality of your food intake. Besides, it's far more fun and satisfying!
