European Kitchen Design - the Best of Design and Materials?

european-kitchen-design

The European kitchen design we have come to recognise is a combination of a heritage in Europe of many different styles; the hill towns of Italy and France , the haciendas of Spain, the English country estates and sophisticated Parisian apartments amongst others, make up this European Kitchen design style.

The emphasis is on functionality, efficiency and beauty. Always aesthetically appealing, this style of kitchen directly responds to those living a fast-paced lifestyle. The look is very modern , yet practical, streamlined, integrated and sleek. Top grade appliances , craftsmanship which is carefully applied in ways to maximise space availability and requirements of the chef and family's needs, are present.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is striking and universal for those wanting very contemporary, sleek, sophisticated, efficient and clever use of their kitchen space. A sense of expense and the latest in styles and trends are felt. The design is ergonomically good, too.

Design elements

  • Often the kitchen has to fit into a small space, as in a city apartment...so the design is tight, where every inch of space must count.
  • The European kitchen cabinetry is integrated and in order to keep the appearance as streamlined as possible, the drawers and cabinets use seamless pulls .
  • All appliances are hidden when not in use behind the panels and doors of the cabinetry. Countertop appliances are often hidden in enclosed spaces on the benchtops.
  • Lighting consists of carefully positioned task lighting and ambient or background lighting. All lighting would be eco-efficient and the fittings would match or contrast with other appliances and metals used in the European Kitchen design.

  • Appliances and other fittings are likely to be stainless steel...the floor may even consist of recycled aluminium tiles.
  • Natural or engineered stone may be used in countertops, although there is a growing trend to 'go green' with recycled cans, paper, porcelain and ceramic tile used as well. These materials make for stunning countertops.
  • An oversized island counter is often included in this European design. It becomes a place to perform all kitchen activities (preparation, cooking, washing up) and gives a place for the family to eat casual meals.
  • The colors are predominantly whites, light greys, lattes and mocchas, although the latest color uses of deep purple and balck are gaining popularity quickly. Inject color in the backsplash - behind glass or using glass mosaic tiles or match the stainless steel of appliances with recycled metallic aluminium or copper tiles.
  • Add LED lighting under countertops or wall cabinets for a great contemporary look, ambience and for night access to the kitchen.
  • Use sliding frosted glass doors for wall cabinets, large drawers instead of lower cabinets.

  • Use any innovative design feature that makes sense in your space.
  • If you feel that the basic design for traffic flow and movement is complicated, use a designer to get the very best design and use of your space.
  • A sliding countertop can be added if space is at a premium. It is extensively used in Europe.
  • Add a space in the same integrated look for an 'office' . Here, you can have a laptop, benchtop and storage space for paying bills, reading recipes and assisting children with internet and homework.
  • Perhaps you'll need to integrate a washing machine and dryer into this space too, as in the European kitchen design tradition. You can make a laundry in a deeper cupboard space and keep it behind doors when not in use.
  • Redesigning your present kitchen or building an entirely new one, will add value to your house and will give you great pleasure when you cook and entertain, in your new European kitchen style kitchen. Keep focused on design, gorgeous materials, efficiency and appeal and your style will wow your visitors, too!
