Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets
Knowing how to build your own kitchen cabinets may mean that you can do this yourself as well as install them successfully - with a helper. You won't necessarily need to hire a professional- but it does take a fair amount of do-it-yourself skills and basic tools. Installing them level, plumb, and flush with each other is critical to ensuring that they work properly and look great.
Build your kitchen cabinets and install them successfully
Assemble the cabinets, leaving the doors off until later. Most modular cabinets come with instructions and go together quite easily. Ensure that the cabinets are assembled as securely, squarely and evenly as possible. Mark the cabinet positions on the wall with a pencil, a level and measuring tape.
Remove doors, drawers and movable shelves. Cabinets will be lighter and easier to install.
Install upper cabinets first if possible, so that you will not need to work over the lower cabinets to do so. The first wall and base cabinets are the most important - if you are able to install these level from back to front and side to side, the other cabinets should follow suit. Mark the locations of the wall studs for the lower cabinets, then set the cabinets into place.
Do a test fit and, if the cabinets are backed, make any cutouts necessary for electrical outlets, plumbing arrangements and so on.
Install the upper cabinets with help as they can be very heavy, while you screw them to the studs within the wall.
Test fit the counter top. Cut it to the correct length if necessary, remebering to make it a little shorter than the length of the room. Cut out the sink hole and the opening for the stove if it is to be inbuilt.
Position the counter top onto the lower cabinets. Fix it by screwing in from underneath, making sure that the screws you use are shorter than the width they will secure, so that they will not break through the countertop surface.
When you build your own kitchen cabinets, you can choose the style and decor to suit the themes in your home. Don't forget to consider refacing your old cabinetry - you'll be very happy with the results!
